Rory McIlroy came within a whisker of making the first albatross of his career but had to settle for an eagle at the par-five 18th in the third round at the Deutsche Bank Championship in MA on Sunday.

Third round leader Casey had begun the day three shots clear, but saw his challenge unravel after posting four bogeys in a two-over-par 73 to finish second.

Despite starting the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs 4-over through three holes, McIlroy rebounded to claim his second win at TPC Boston at 15-under overall.

Deutsche Bank gave him the blue belt with a large silver buckle when McIlroy won four years ago, and because this was the last year it is sponsoring the tournament, the company wanted him to keep it.

The Englishman headed to the final hole needing an eagle to force a play-off but he couldn't find the shot needed to deny McIlroy an impressive victory.

He responded positively as he converted a precise approach to 10 feet at 13, but he raced a birdie putt 10 feet beyond the target on the next green and failed to make the return.

Adam Scott and 2016 PGA Championship victor Jimmy Walker finished in a tie for third on 11-under. But he made an 18-foot birdie on the par-3 eighth, and followed that with a 10-footer on the ninth to make the turn in 31.

Englishman Casey, hunting his second career win on the USA circuit, led by three strokes after 54 holes but had to settle for second place after closing with a 73.

The 27-year-old from Northern Ireland fell out of the "Big 3" conversation earlier this year when Dustin Johnson won the U.S. Open, Henrik Stenson won the British Open and McIlroy kept sliding, largely because of his putting.

"I came off the back of a rough couple of weeks", he said. Then I just went with it. "I was thinking, 'Here we go again, ' and that it was going to be a little bit of a grind and a bit of a struggle".
