One person has been shot at Alpine High School in western Texas and two shooters are believed to be on the loose the Brewster County Sheriff's office said Thursday

A woman who answered the phone at the Alpine Independent School District described the situation as "contained".

The district made the announcement Thursday evening after its board of trustees met to discuss the morning shooting. The deadliest mass school shooting was in 2007, when a gunman slaughtered 32 people at Virginia Tech university.

Sheriff's officials have praised the school's response to the incident, which included locking down classrooms until early afternoon.

Hucke declined to say how the victims were injured or further identify them.

Following the shooting, area public schools and Sul Ross State University were put on lockdown because a bomb threat was issued by a male caller. "The first ones on the scene did not really know what was happening", said Alpine Police Chief Russell Scown. A note making a bomb threat was found on a motel door, he said. Her injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening. Parents have reportedly been advised that the students were evacuated to a Jehovah Witness Church across the street, where they can be picked up.

The victim was reportedly shot in the lower extremities and is being treated at a hospital; her current condition is not known. Steve Houston told CNN that the shooting occurred in the school's band hall. Dodson says the 14-year-old later died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The names and ages of the two students have not yet been released.

Hucke said the hospital would provide a statement later Thursday.

In the meantime, Dodson told the news channel that law enforcement agencies then turned from the school shooting to deal with another situation nearby. All schools will remain on lockdown.

Additionally, a police officer was accidentally shot by another officer at the high school.

"There was blood on the floor in the cafeteria that I saw when we went past it on our way out of the school", the student said. I have directed my office to offer any measure of support needed to assist the law enforcement officials now working this case.

The girl had reportedly shot another female student in the school's toilets before taking her own life.
