NY firefighters at scene of possible building explosion; 25 inju

The blast, according to a Reuters witness, occurred on 23rd Street, a major east-west thoroughfare in the fashionable downtown neighborhood of Chelsea.

A Fire Department of NY official said there were 15 reported injuries, and all the injuries were minor. No fatalities have been reported, and there is no word yet on what caused the possible explosion.

City Councilman Corey Johnson, who represents the area, told cable news station New York 1 that FBI and federal Homeland Security officials were on the scene, in addition to New York City police. You can see in numerous videos that the streets in the area have all been blocked off, and that emergency vehicles are all over the place.

The explosion comes just hours after a pipe bomb exploded in a New Jersey town, shortly before thousands of runners were to participate in a charity race nearby.
