President Barack Obama met informally Wednesday with Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, various media report.
The two presidents are in the Laotian capital along with other regional leaders for the ASEAN Summit.
"I'm very happy that it happened", Philippines' foreign minister, Perfecto Yasay, said of their short meeting.
He insisted his remarks were not directed at Obama but at the US State Department, which has raised concerns over potential human rights violations in Duterte's anti-crime campaign which has left nearly 3,000 dead in just over two months.
"Check it out. Check it out", Duterte recalled telling Obama in a holding room.
"As far as Mr. Trump, I think I've already offered my opinion", Obama said.
But Obama ended up exchanging pleasantries with Duterte on the summit's sidelines.
On Monday, Duterte had said that he would not take any question from Obama regarding the extrajudicial killings in Philippines, which have occurred ever since he won the presidential elections in June. "Putang ina, I will curse you in that forum", Mr. Duterte told reporters, using the Filipino phrase for "son of a bitch", Duterte said after flying to Laos.
