Malcolm Turnbull said that Australian jets were involved in the airstrikes which killed dozens of Syrian soldiers, after they were mistaken for Islamic State (IS) forces at the Deir al-Zour military airport in the Middle Eastern nation's east.
The Pentagon said coalition aircraft conducted an airstrike south of Deir ez-Zour that was "halted immediately" after Russian Federation informed the USA -led coalition "that it was possible the personnel and vehicles targeted were part of the Syrian military". Australian, British and Danish warplanes were also involved in the attack.
Moscow and Washington have been trading blame over a fragile Syrian cease-fire that has been violated on numerous occasions since it began last Monday.
Analysts believe the botched raid will strain relations between Washington and Moscow, which have vastly different agendas in Syria.
62 Syrian soldiers were killed and over 100 injured in the airstrike.
Russia, which along with Iran supports Syria's Assad, has called on the United States to press units of the moderate Syrian opposition to separate themselves from Islamic State and other "terrorist groups".
Shortly after Syria's armed forces declared that the truce was dead and blamed opposition rebels for undermining it, Kerry noted that the cease-fire had not produced the desired reduction in violence and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid.

Russia's defense ministry had appeared to bury the week-old truce it agreed with the United States, saying rebel violations made it "pointless" for Syrian troops to uphold it.
Russian Federation said the United States was being obstructive and deceptive regarding the airstrike by coalition warplanes on the Syrian military position.
Activists and rebel groups also accused the government of violating the agreement.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists inside Syria, said the us -led coalition struck army positions in Tharda mountain and a nearby artillery division, killing 90 troops and wounding 110.
Syria's cease-fire was on the brink of failure Sunday after warplanes struck rebel strongholds in eastern Aleppo, one day after the US -led coalition bombed Syrian government troops.
Syrian state news agency SANA reported last last week that the truce would last until midnight on Sunday.
"During the sixth day of the ceasefire. only the Syrian government troops have been actually observing the moratorium on combat operations", Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov said.
