A suspicious backpack, containing up to five improvised explosive devices, was found at a New Jersey train station today, one of which exploded while a police robot was examining it, a day after a powerful blast injured 29 people in an upscale NY locality.

The two men alerted the Elizabeth Police Department after noticing that the backpack, near Hector's Place Restaurant, contained "wires and a pipe", The New York Times reported. Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage said the device exploded shortly after 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Mr Bollwage said late Sunday that all trains from New Jersey Transit and Amtrak going through Elizabeth had been shut down and that a shuttle would arrive to shepherd stranded passengers away.
