When leadoff man Dee Gordon, who is left-handed and was among Fernandez's closest friends on the team, stepped up to the plate for the team's first at-bat, he took the first pitch from the right side of the batter's box as a tribute to Fernandez. Bernal said Rivero had tried to get him to go on the boat, but he didn't like the idea of boating at night and declined.
Fernandez's funeral will be a private mass on Thursday, but the day before the city he called home and those who watched the baseball star shine are invited to the stadium to say goodbye.
