Cardinals top Reds on Molina's disputed double

Share

Molina's eight run of the season came in the fifth, giving the Cardinals a 3-1 lead.

But they did - because by the time Cincinnati figured out what happened, it was too late.

At the very least, the Cardinals should not have beaten the Cincinnati Reds, 4-3, on Yadier Molina's two-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday night.

After Salvador Perez's pinch-hit RBI single with two outs in the ninth pulled the Royals within a run, Terrance Gore ran for him. They fell 1 1/2 games back of San Francisco for wild card number two, pending the outcome of the Giants' game with Colorado. Molina went ahead 2-0 in the count, then ripped a 95 miles per hour fastball to left field. "And I told him exactly what I told you", Miller said. "I saw it, I heard it".

Yadier Molina's deep drive in the ninth inning hit the warning track and bounced off the second wall in left field, which should have been called a ground-rule double. Matt Carpenter, who started the rally with a one-out walk, scored all the way from first. "I came inside and they said it was a ground-rule double.it's been an up-and-down season but we got a big win". Instead, the Cardinals celebrated. Manager Bryan Price wanted to have the play reviewed, but when he went onto the field, the umpires were nowhere to be found. Price chased after them but to no avail.

"It's a awful rule", Price said. "I mean, 10 seconds to decide if you want to challenge it or not".

St. Louis' South Korean reliever Seung Hwan Oh (6-3) wound up with the win, after blowing his third save in 21 tries this season, pitching one inning for two hits and two strike-outs.

The Cardinals are currently a game behind the Giants for the final spot in the Wild Card game, two behind the Mets who own the top spot for now.

Mariners 12, Astros 4: Robinson Cano hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and the Mariners kept pressure on the other AL wild-card contenders.

The Mariners are two games behind Baltimore and Toronto with three to play.

Therefore, it should not have scored Matt Carpenter with the winning run from first base.

Oh later said he could have closed the inning but wanted to be sure he was fit for the next game.
