Sparta Police Informs Citizens of Updated Hunting Regulations for 2016 Season

The second day of the extended bear hunt in New Jersey saw another 75 bears killed, bringing the two-day total to 281, according to figures released by the state Department of Environmental Protection Tuesday night.

Officials say 206 bears were killed on the first day of the hunt. This area includes all or portions of Hunterdon, Passaic, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties, and a small portion of Bergen County.

The first three days are archery style hunting only, while muzzle-loading guns will be allowed on the last three days. The state is required to call off the hunt if 30 percent of the bears tagged in 2016 are harvested.

The division is obligated to pursue and tag bears that are deemed to be nuisances.

More information on the bear hunt is available on the DEP's bear hunting season website.

The northwestern part of New Jersey has one of the densest populations of bears in the nation, resulting in the potential for conflicts with people.

Fish and Wildlife also traps bears and tags them.

"Allowing bears to be hunted with bows and arrows has even greater potential than firearms to inflict painful, gruesome injuries and slow, agonizing deaths", Jennifer Place, a program associate for Born Free USA, told The Dodo. Bears can not be chased out of dens. The firearm season this year will be held December 5 through December 10.
