Any hopes of the New York Jets building upon 2015's 10-6 season and earning a playoff berth fell with a whopping thud on Monday evening as they lost to the Arizona Cardinals, 28-3, in a game which wasn't as close as the final score would indicate.

The Cardinals second-year player ran for 111 yards against a Jets defence that constantly struggled to track his sprints.

Apparently, Bowles doesn't care that Fitzpatrick leads the National Football League in turnovers with his 11 (he's fumbled five times this season, but he's yet to lose one, keeping his margin over Jameis Winston in the NFL's worst stat to lead at one) or that he's thrown zero second-half touchdowns to 10 second-half interceptions.

"Fitz will be back next week", Bowles told reporters after the Jets (1-5) fell to the Cardinals 28-3 for their fourth straight defeat.

Fitzpatrick finished with 174 yards on 16-of-31 passing with a passer rating of 55.0 before being replaced by Geno Smith in the fourth quarter.

Fitzpatrick has an NFL-leading 11 interceptions, and Smith added one of his own in mop-up duty against the Cardinals.

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson, center, celebrates his touchdown run with guard Earl Watford (78) and tight end Darren Fells (85) during the first half of an NFL football game against the New York Jets, Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, in Glendale, Ariz.

"If we could just be consistent, stay consistent, we can continue to win football games".

The Cardinals defense had an outstanding night as a unit, but LB D.J. Swearinger shined in particular. Which play swung the game the most in the Cardinals' favor Monday by that formula? "We've still got some stages to go before we get to that point, but it's definitely possible".

"Our coach has been harping on us about that", Johnson said.

Arizona scored in the first quarter for the first time this season on the second time Johnson touched the ball.

"Everybody loves the home run ball", Palmer said, "but completions are completions". It's been almost 30 years since the franchise has rushed for those many yards in back-to-back games.

"Questionable or not, four penalties are four penalties", Bowles said after the game. "They came when they came and we capitalized on them". I think the main thing is we've gotten so much better in the run game.

Running back Johnson opened the scoring five minutes into the first quarter, finding a gap in the defence and bursting through for a 58 yard touchdown, the longest of his career to date.

"You know you give him a little bit, he's going to get a lot", Watford said.

"I think that once you get a taste of winning, you remember what it feels like, you remember how hard it is to get and you want to do the things that are necessary to make sure you have sustained success, and I think guys understand that now". He also hasn't had more than 65 rushing yards in any game during that span. What was even better to watch was how excited Arians and him got when the TD review came back positive.

As a team, the Cardinals registered 27 first downs, went 5-for-12 on third down and tallied 396 yards of total offense. We've got to take it a week at a time.
