Unable to stay completely patient, Rodgers mixed short passes with plays set up for down the field throws.
Let's start with the offense. Minus Lacy, who was placed on injured reserve at midday, the Packers disdained any pretense of a ground game and went all spread from shotgun formation.
The Packers had two running backs available in Knile Davis and Don Jackson, but Davis was first acquired in a trade from Kansas City on Tuesday and Jackson wasn't promoted from the practice squad until Thursday. "It was just a weird night". Davis got on the field late for his Green Bay debut, gaining one yard on two carries.
"A lot of moving parts, a very satisfying victory at home", coach Mike McCarthy said.
Green Bay responded with a 13-play, 85-yard drive to retake the lead when Adams adjusted and reached back to haul in a five-yard touchdown catch with 9:11 left in the quarter.
Cobb finished with 11 catches for 95 yards. Howard's vision seemed to take a small step backwards in this game. On the defense, Green Bay is allowing 339.0 yards in passing nad 72.4 yards in rushing.
PASS TO RUN: Montgomery got the start in the backfield with running backs Eddie Lacy (ankle) and James Starks (knee) out.
Davante Adams caught the first of his two touchdowns in the third quarter and he combined once more with Rodgers at the start of the fourth. Since he's always waiting for someone to get open, he tends to miss the small window when his running backs are actually free.

The Tar Heels won their second straight game to remain in the hunt in the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division. But after a sack the Mountaineers would be knocked out of field goal range as the clock turned to the fourth quarter.
Death toll from Cameroon rail crash climbs to 63
The minister said the derailment had "caused significant human and material damage but I can't at this time give you any figures". The local hospital had been overwhelmed, with only about 60 beds, said transport minister Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo'o.
To make things even better though, that wasn't the only first he would pick up tonight, bringing down Rodgers near the end zone, knocking the ball out of his hands, and then recovering it for his first career fumble recovery. Montgomery actually gives McCarthy more to work with because he's a bit sturdier physically - Cobb is listed at 5-foot-10, 192 pounds; Montgomery is 6-foot, 216 pounds - and can be a more realistic option on handoffs as a running back. Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains couldn't do much when he lost his only experienced quarterback.
It was all Packers from there. Just spit out plays.
Rodgers threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns, setting a Packers record for completions in a game with 37 in the process, as Green Bay improved their record to 4-2.
The offense piled up 408 total yards on a whopping 81 plays, picking up 32 first downs and controlling the clock for 39:36. The Bears can only hope they have their gunslinger leading the offense against the league's top defense.
Randall Cobb matched his career high with 11 receptions, resulting in 96 yards.
That portends a heavy workload for Montgomery, who went from playing just 17 offensive snaps in the team's first four games - including zero against Minnesota on September 25 - to playing 35 of the Packers' 70 offensive snaps against the Cowboys.
Maybe it was a coincidence but Rodgers was on fire from that point and capped each of the next three drives with touchdown passes that was more than enough to send Green Bay (4-2) past Chicago (1-6). The Packers have not led the series since 1932.
The only injuries from the game were Jackson's hand injury in the first half and T.J. Lang with a hip injury but he was able to return to the contest and finish.
