On 49ers: A Chip Kelly his ex-players might not recognize
Oct 25 2016 by Marjorie Miles
Kelly announced the decision Tuesday to bench Blaine Gabbert and to give back the starting job that Kaepernick lost midway through last season.
While sidelined because of performance and injury issues, Kaepernick made national headlines for refusing to stand up for the national anthem before games.
"We were very analytical and sat down as a staff and watched the tape, went over everything", Kelly said. "We've had a couple days to digest everything where we are. But I just feel like there's bad people, there's bad cops and there's good cops".
His 69.6 QB rating ranked 30th out of 31 qualified passers, with only Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and his 10 interceptions lower.
Changes at guard: Speaking of rotations, Kelly indicated the 49ers could play both Andrew Tiller and Joshua Garnett at right guard on Sunday against the Bills.
But even then, i'm pretty sure if Chip Kelly had the choice, he wouldn't have started Blaine Gabbert. "We need to improve on the offensive side of the ball, and this is the decision we've made", he said.
"So that's something actually, me and my foundation we'll be going and also inner-city kids we're going to bring them to the game, too". So, when I said that's the only maneuver you could make, it's not like 'Well geez, [running back] Carlos [Hyde] isn't playing well.' Well Shaun Draughn plays, Mike Davis plays.
Kelly added that Kaepernick's protest against racial oppression and inequality will not be any more of an issue now that the 28-year-old is in the starting line up. DT Corbin Bryant (ankle), P Colton Schmidt (right quadriceps), S Aaron Williams (foot), WR Marquise Goodwin (illness) and C Patrick Lewis (knee) were limited. "So, if Colin (Kaepernick) took all the reps with the ones on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, somebody's "mole" would have told them who was taking all the reps, you know what I mean?"
Gabbert will be the No. 2 quarterback Sunday when the 49ers look for their first road win in three outings.
Whether Kelly wants to admit it or not, it's evident that the 49ers were willing to go to third-string quarterback Christian Ponder if Kaepernick's contract was not amended to alleviate the team's concerns over the injury clauses.
"He's capable to be the backup", Kelly said.
However, according to a source, the contract could be for Kaepernick's a year ago with the team. So, that's what I said. He played in the final preseason contest against San Diego and handed the ball off three times in the Niners' season-opening win against the Rams.
"We're not making major changes, guys", O'Neil said. Kaepernick was healthy at the start of last season and played eight games. He had a serious layoff in terms of being able to medical rehab.
