Blue Jays sign Kendrys Morales to 3-year, $33 million deal
Nov 12 2016 by Marjorie Miles
Morales batted.263 past year with 30 home runs and 93 runs batted in. Morales turns 34 in June and should provide a steady bat for the Blue Jays' offense. Encarnacion was given a qualifying offer, however.
"We're operating under the rules as they exist and that's the direction that we've been given, so we're moving forward that way", the Blue Jays GM said. He has been an important source of power for the Royals averaging 26 home runs a season in his tenure, which included a silver-slugger award and a World Series Championship.
The Cuban missed most of the 2010 season and all of 2011 after breaking his leg during a celebration of a walk-off home run he hit as member of the Angels. He played 10 games and 74 total innings in the field last season, spread between first base and right field. A new era is beginning in Toronto, and it should be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Encarnacion is the top free agent on the market, and likely will receive at least a four- or five year deal worth more than $100 million.
With that said, signing Morales is a win-now move.
It's not yet known whether free agent outfielder Jose Bautista will leave the Toronto Blue Jays for greener pastures. Morales will get three years, $33 million, according to Fox Sports . He wouldn't necessarily need to replace the production on his own either, as his signing frees up additional payroll space for the Blue Jays to pursue other needs, such as in the outfield.
