Schumer Backs Keith Ellison For DNC Chairman

In addition to Sanders, Ellison has received endorsements from Senators Elizabeth Warren, who told MSNBC he'd make a "terrific" chair, as well as Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY). Ellison and two other Sanders appointees argued forcefully for language that would criticize Israel for its West Bank occupation but were rebuffed.

The 53-year-old Democrat has been in Congress since 2007, representing Minnesota's 5th congressional district, which encompasses greater-Minneapolis.

He's no Donald Trump: Ellison's biography could not be more of a stark contrast to the most controversial elements of Trump's message.

A quick glance at Ellison's impressive resume reveals that he has a consistent record of support for progressive ideals, and that he is, at a time when unity is desperately needed, also the only Muslim in Congress. He reportedly asked why they should trust her to lead, saying, "You backed a flawed candidate". But there is no getting around an early decision by Democrats as to whether their most urgent challenge is to get a grip on why they lost and develop a detailed plan for recovery, or simply to throw out the Clinton/Obama crowd and claim the DNC as a trophy for the left.

Rep. Ellison is someone that rank and file Democrats can excitedly support.

The Sanders and Warren wing is now the loudest liberal voice speaking out after the election.

"You can't tell working people you're on their side while at the same time you're raising money from Wall Street and the billionaire class", the Vermont senator told The Washington Post.

In a conference call Thursday night with members of the liberal grass-roots group Democracy for Action, Ellison said he would make an announcement Monday about whether he will be a candidate for DNC chairman.

Ellison is one of several Democrats who may be itching to chair the party.

The DNC is in charge of the operations of the Democratic Party.

Ellison, who co-sponsored a bill to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney, could be a controversial choice. Perhaps the most famous example of this came right after his 2006 election. "So there you go", hinted Ellison.

"I haven't talked to him. And so, you know, I don't need to - need to prove my patriotic stripes".

According to POLITICO, it's quite possible.

At the heart of Ellison's sudden popularity among progressives is the opportunity to fundamentally reshape the role of the DNC. Sanders, who ran as an "outsider" focused on working people, garnered 43 percent of votes in the Democratic primary.

But the current formula, progressive Democrats say, is largely broken. Every state Democratic chair and vice chair is a voting member of the 450 or so member DNC. Is a Jeremy Corbyn (the lefty leader of the British Labor Party) moment what Democrats really need? "The DNC should be both an organizing tool and an advocacy tool", said Rep. Raul M. Grijalva (D) of Arizona, echoing Sanders, in an interview with the Post.
