Alok Verma, Commissioner and former DGP of Delhi is reportedly in pole position to take over as the Chief of Central Bureau of Investigation, a post that has been vacant following the retirement of former chief Anil Sinha. However, a formal announcement was on Monday withheld after the meeting of the search committee which went on until late in the evening, ended with the leader of the main opposition party in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, seeking to put in a dissent note. The Centre has reportedly briefed the attorney general, who will then inform the Supreme Court that Verma has been chosen for the post. At present, the matter is sub judice.

The government had also placed the names of two other candidates, home ministry official RKDutta and Maharashtra DGPSCMathur, before the panel for consideration. The SC had said that the senior most four officers will be empaneled.
Verma, a 1979 batch IPS officer of the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre, served as the Director General of Tihar jail before replacing BS Bassi as the Delhi police chief in February 2016.
