A tornado watch is in effect for central and northern IL until 10 p.m.
There could be isolated tornadoes that pop up, Seeley said, but there's a "better risk" the tornadoes will form south of the city. People were dislocated due to multiple tornadoes and a lot of them had to seek shelter at the nearby schools.
Homes and businesses also sustained significant damage.
"Besides the tornadoes, there was a lot of hail reports across the area", Seeley said.
A few miles away, a tornado shredded the La Salle County nursing home. Minor injuries were also reported at an Ottawa nursing home, but Thompson said the number of those hurt in the twisters was not known. In Ottawa, powerful winds ripped giant trees from the ground, knocking out power in the area. There was a portable shed or silo down in Manhattan Township, but there was minimal other damage throughout the county as of 7:10 p.m., he said.
Workers with the LaSalle County Emergency Management Agency were out surveying damage, the office said. In Tulia, Texas, four homes were destroyed and almost 1,200 evacuated when strong winds caused the rapid spread of wildfires.
A tornado watch was issued in areas of Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois and in as the Storm Prediction Center warned of winds above 111mph (179kph).
Drivers stopped along USA 60 east of Springfield, Missouri, according to the Wright County Sheriff's Office.
