Tornado watch declared for Illinois, NW Indiana

Large areas of the central U.S. have spent the night under a tornado watch as severe weather puts 45 million people at risk.

Multiple tornados were spotted across IL, as they carved a path through the state early Tuesday evening.

Naplate is a small town just west of Ottawa, Illinois.

The National Weather Service has yet to estimate top wind speeds of the tornadoes that hit on Tuesday, but teams were being sent out Wednesday to assess the damage.

All residents in the area south of Perryville impacted by Tuesday night's tornado have been accounted for, Sheriff Gary Schaaf told CNN. Baseball sized hail was also observed in the area. "Red dots on the map are tornadoes, green is a hail report (1" in diameter or greater) and a blue dot is a wind damage report.

In Ava, near the southern tip of IL, lightning revealed the size of a massive twister.

The two targeted buildings, plus a third one attached to the engineering building, were evacuated at 11:30 a.m. It was signed by the "C4 coordinator - Concordia University".

News outlets in southern IL and eastern Missouri showed footage of rescue workers digging through destroyed homes and clearing debris from highways. Twelve people were injured but none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
