Gudi Padwa marks the start of Chaitra month as per the Hindu calendar celebrating Lord Rama's victorious return to Ayodhya after slaying Ravana.

Ahead of Gudi Padwa, the Maharashtrian new year, on Tuesday, Regional Transport offices (RTO) in the city have reported an increase in the registration of cars and bikes.Generally, customers prefer to get the new vehicles delivered on this day as they regard it auspicious. People begin their day by taking a traditional, holy oil-bath and by offering their prayers. The name derived from the Sanskrit word name for Chaitra Shukla Pratipad. "RTO offices will remain open on Gudi Padwa too, but not much work is expected to take place on that day as people prefer to take deliveries then", said an RTO source. On Gudi Padwa, people prepare special delicacies and sweet dishes which adds to the celebration. "Neem leaves, a mango leaves and a garland of red flowers are tied to the tip of a long bamboo on which a copper pot is placed in the inverted position".
