Man Utd see £40M Eric Dier as Michael Carrick successor

Manchester United want to bring in Tottenham's Eric Dier in what is expected to be a summer of big spending, according to the Sun.

The Sun are reporting that Jose Mourinho is planning to table a bid for the Tottenham star as he looks to bolster his squad in the summer transfer window.

The "Special One" supposedly views Dier, who has excelled in a number of positions under Mauricio Pochettino, as a long-term successor to Michael Carrick in the heart of the United midfield.

Seasoned negotiators Spurs have no intention of parting with Dier, but Mourinho is hopeful a £40m offer can prise him away from White Hart Lane.

It is believed the Old Trafford club is willing to spend £40 million (R653 million) on the midfielder to replace the 35-year-old at the Red Devils.

Premier League fans were denied the chance to see the pair go head to head, with Dier left on the bench for Tottenham's visit to Manchester United a month later, a fixture which the England ace was surely eyeing.

The French global has developed in to one of the best players on the planet during his time with Atletico so he won't be cheap with any transfer fee expected to go close to the £89m United paid for Paul Pogba.

The Sun also claims that Mourinho is looking to add a centre-back, a central midfielder and striker this summer and Dier is wanted as the man to kick off the summer spree.

As the Mail point out, Dier is no longer guaranteed a starting spot in midfield has played predominantly as a defender this season, either filling in for first-choice pair Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, or used as one of three centre-backs in a 3-5-2.
