Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia lead The Masters

Spain's Sergio Garcia has won the Masters beating Englishman Justin Rose in a playoff

Garcia's approach came within 10 feet, and Rose followed to within 14.

Rickie Fowler's putter saved him as he got to five under and just one off the pace going into Sunday. "Those are the kind of moments people who win this tournament have on Sunday".

Spieth, who has finished second, first and second at Augusta National in three appearances, is a real battler and will be aiming to use that quality to good effect on the last day.

Instead, his tee shot bounced off the slope and into the water.

American William McGirt stood two adrift in fifth on 142 with Spain's Jon Rahm, England's Rose and Americans Fred Couples and Ryan Moore on 143.

"Just fighting hard", Garcia said. "So you've just got to roll with it and realize that sometimes you're going to get good breaks, like has happened to me a few times this week, and sometimes you're going to get not so good breaks". But you know, it's been good.

If you are into a Renaissance of English golfers, then Rose is your man.

The Masters is due for some extra holes - the last playoff coming four years ago when Adam Scott defeated Angel Cabrera in the rain.

Jordan Spieth hits on the 12th hole during the third round of the Masters golf tournament Saturday, April 8, 2017, in Augusta, Ga.

All four players were seeking a first major title and knew the importance of staying close to the lead, with every Masters champion since 1990 being inside the top five after 54 holes.

"So it means that I have to stay positive tomorrow".

Australia's Adam Scott, the 2013 Masters victor, was seventh on 213 with 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa another stroke adrift with England's Lee Westwood and Belgium's Thomas Pieters on 215. Pieters was first to leave the rarefied air with a bogey at the first, but it was the 11th that removed him from the list of viable contenders.

Fowler floundered early, standing 1 over for the day through the 10th.

He won the Masters back in 2011, making four consecutive birdies to win when McIlroy imploded on the back nine.

"We've been having a blast this week", Fowler said. "Really, really enjoy playing this golf course, enjoy the imagination that's necessary". But with that being said, even when you're playing conservative lines, you still have to execute. You still have to play smart when you have to. Garcia had an opportunity to win the tournament in 72 holes, but he missed a short birdie look on the 18th green at Augusta National. He wound up with a par on that hole.

Hagestad shot a 2-over-par 74 Saturday and is at 5-over-par. Before Saturday, his third-round average at Augusta was 75. Garcia has a chance to seal the win - talk about pressure!

McIlroy blistered drives of more than 300 yards in the fairway on the two par 5s on the back nine at Augusta, and both times walked off with pars.

The dramatic shot put Kuchar into contention briefly before Garcia and Rose pulled away. He pitched to seven feet after taking a penalty drop, but he was unable to limit the damage and two-putted for a double bogey. On No. 15, he made a 4-footer for birdie.

"I'm not sure", Spieth said when asked to put his finger on it.

"I guess the golf course was Tiger-proofed at one point". I didn't feel like I hit a bad shot.

"I gave a decent account of myself and will come back next year and try again".

Still, with all of that talent at the top, the real favorite might be Spieth.

After a slow start, the 81 Masters is set up for a blistering finish. The camera mics picked up him saying that when he was deciding the best way to make birdie on the 13th hole Saturday.
