2 Detroit police officers injured in shooting

Two Detroit police officers were shot and wounded while responding to a call late Sunday night.

A family member told police there were three break-in attempts reported at the home on Sunday, FOX 2 Detroit reported.

Detroit Police were called to the home to investigate a possible burglary, when police say a single shot was sacked from inside the home.

Two Detroit officers are in the hospital, and one is fighting for their life. He said there was at least one call that drew police to an abandoned home across the street.

The 19-year-old opened fired on two officers with a shotgun "fearing for the safety" of his mother and brother, Detroit police Chief James Craig said at a media briefing on Monday.

Police say they were taken to Sinai Grace Hospital where the officer shot in the arm was treated and released and the other was in critical condition.

"The young man who fired the shot is in custody", Craig said. The other officer joined the department 18 months ago.
