Zuma Unfazed By Calls For His Resignation

President Jacob Zuma

Demonstrators gathered in Pretoria yesterday for further protests urging President Jacob Zuma to step down. Zuma gave a lengthy speech at his 75 birthday celebrations in Kliptown, Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon.

Ten of South Africa's 12 opposition parties have united to undertake the new campaign, which, it was stressed, is not after regime change but rather an end to Mr Zuma's presidency.

During a joint briefing in Pretoria on Monday, the parties said the mass action to the Union Buildings marks "the beginning of a consciousness movement aimed at educating ordinary South Africans about the consequences of being downgraded to junk status by rating agencies".

Meanwhile, Save SA has slammed Zuma saying that him playing the race card demonstrates that he's a desperate man.

The Constitutional Court a year ago found Zuma guilty of violating the constitution after he refused to repay taxpayers' money used to refurbish his private rural house. "I've been called names for years", said a jovial Zuma, speaking in the Zulu language.

Thousands of people marched from Church Square to the Union Buildings all agreeing on one thing - the president's removal.

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury - who limited the Blue Jackets to two goals in the first two games - settled down, too. Bryan Rust added two goals for Pittsburgh, and Marc-Andre Fleury overcame a shaky first period to make 33 saves.

Concrete highway rupture sends motorcyclist flying
Another major highway in metro Atlanta has been closed, this one because an underground gas leak caused the fast lane to buckle. In late March, a bridge on I-85 collapsed after a major fire , which local authorities believe was arson.

Zuma's decision to fire Pravin Gordhan as finance minister and make 19 other changes to his administration on March 31 drew widespread criticism, prompted S&P Global Ratings to downgrade the nation's worldwide credit rating to junk and weakened the rand. "I can't see how anyone cannot see that he is critically destructive", said Maguire, who said she had no party affiliation. As Peter Granitz reports from Pretoria, pressure is mounting on the president from both outside and inside his party. He was sacked by President over two weeks ago, together with his deputy, former Eastern Cape MEC for Economic Development, Mcebisi Jonas, in a controversial Cabinet Reshuffle that has since seen the country downgraded to junk status by two rating agencies.

The demonstration is a backdrop to the motion of no confidence vote in Zuma next Tuesday.

"We want to say we love him, happy birthday Baba, may God bless him to be healthy and remain strong because he is a strong man", Mamabolo said.

"In addition to an online petition, our activists and public representatives have been going door-to-door in every corner of South Africa encouraging support for the petition", sad Van Damme.

She said: "The president has betrayed the people of South Africa, and has sold our country to the Guptas, to corrupt individuals, who seek to serve their own interests and not the interest of the people". Yet less than a week later, the party had closed ranks around Zuma and warned ANC parliamentarians not to vote with the opposition in a forthcoming motion of no confidence in the president.

The rallies were sparked by Zuma's decision to fire Pravin Gordhan as his finance minister.
