San Diego Police Kill Assailant in Pool Party Attack

Seven people were shot - one fatally - in California after a gunman who witnesses say was "holding a beer" opened fire at pool party Sunday.

The upscale complex is located near the University of California San Diego campus and the shooting rang out in what is normally a tranquil location.

A police helicopter was first to respond and reported multiple victims on the ground and that Selis appeared to be reloading.

The suspect was white; all of the shooting victims are people of color - six African-Americans and one Hispanic man.

A black woman died. While two victims are still in critical condition, they are stable and are expected to survive.

'We have zero information that this was racially motivated, ' she said.

"These victims were just in his presence at the wrong place at the wrong time when he committed this awful tragedy", she said.

The chief said that family knew he was distraught and depressed but "they had no idea he would resort to this".

Adding, 'It was really hot outside and he had on kind of a jacket and a T-shirt under the jacket and some cargo shorts.

"He let off eight rounds, reloaded, let off another eight, reloaded again", Demetrius Griffin, a Seattle-area man who attended the party, told CNN. The man had a brief conversation with Selis, though it was not clear what was said, according to Griffin.

Instead, police say 49-year-old Peter Selis was distressed over a recent break up and financial trouble. He was described as "relaxing and shooting people" by one witness.

He filed for federal bankruptcy protection in October 2015, listing $14,000 in assets and $108,000 in liabilities, according to court records.

"Thank you to the San Diego Police Department for braving gunfire to prevent additional casualties and also to the dedicated emergency responders and medical personnel who worked diligently throughout the night to care for the wounded". At the time, he listed a 12-year-old daughter, a 16-year-old son and a 19-year-old stepson on the forms.

According to court records, Selis was a auto mechanic who struggled with massive debt and a failing marriage when he filed for bankruptcy in late 2015.
