Seven people were shot - one fatally - in California after a gunman who witnesses say was "holding a beer" opened fire at pool party Sunday.

The upscale complex is located near the University of California San Diego campus and the shooting rang out in what is normally a tranquil location.

A police helicopter was first to respond and reported multiple victims on the ground and that Selis appeared to be reloading.

The suspect was white; all of the shooting victims are people of color - six African-Americans and one Hispanic man.

A black woman died. While two victims are still in critical condition, they are stable and are expected to survive.

Before the shooting starts, there was a huge birthday party by the pool.

It's unclear how many people were at the pool at the time of the shooting. And at one point, he called his former girlfriend on his cell phone, according to police. Galiendes told The Associated Press that he called out to ask if the man needed help when his roommate grabbed him, yanked him down and then pointed toward a man sitting in a chair with a gun. Instead, police say 49-year-old Peter Selis was distressed over a recent break up and financial trouble. He was described as "relaxing and shooting people" by one witness.

He filed for federal bankruptcy protection in October 2015, listing $14,000 in assets and $108,000 in liabilities, according to court records.

"Thank you to the San Diego Police Department for braving gunfire to prevent additional casualties and also to the dedicated emergency responders and medical personnel who worked diligently throughout the night to care for the wounded". At the time, he listed a 12-year-old daughter, a 16-year-old son and a 19-year-old stepson on the forms.

According to court records, Selis was a auto mechanic who struggled with massive debt and a failing marriage when he filed for bankruptcy in late 2015.
