Trump warns Comey: Better hope there are no 'tapes' of talks
May 20 2017 by Francis Osborne
The president tweeted early Friday, "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"
Sen. Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the intelligence panel, said Friday that he expressed at his meeting with Rosenstein and Boente his preference that Rosenstein name a special prosecutor. He neither confirmed nor denied the existence of tapes of the conversation.
James Clapper, who retired in January as director of national intelligence, told NBC's Andrea Mitchell that Comey told him on the night of the dinner the president had invited him - and he was uneasy about it.
"Nixon didn't get into this degree of trouble until deep into his presidency, four years", Dean said of his former boss - the only other commander-in-chief to fire someone leading a probe into his own affairs. Critics of the Trump administration's handling of the Russian Federation investigation have long held the view that a special prosecutor is needed.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a campaign of interference in the election, USA intelligence agencies concluded in January, aimed at tilting the vote in Trump's favor. Both the president and Russian Federation denies the claims.
Soon after Trump's tweets, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., requested that White House Counsel Donald McGahn turn over any recordings of the president's conversations with Comey to the House Oversight Committee. However, because of the many false statements made by White House officials this week, we are compelled to ask whether any such recordings do in fact exist.
According to press reports, Pence was aware that Trump wanted to fire Comey the week before it happened.
Trump's remark on social media came just hours after The New York Times published an account of a dinner he shared with Comey a week after he was sworn in.
The U.S. Senate's No. 2 Democrat, Richard Durbin, slammed the president after Friday's tweet about Comey. "He's scared, and I think he's trying to bully Comey".
Durbin added, "His credibility has been destroyed".
Press secretary Sean Spicer is refuting that account during his daily briefing.
"As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with flawless accuracy!", the president tweeted.
He added, "Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future "press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???"
A current Federal Bureau of Investigation official and others close to Comey confirmed that the director did not request the one-on-one dinner, which happened at the White House a few days after Trump was sworn in.
WikiLeaks - the organization that infamously released emails associated with the Clinton campaign past year - has offered a $100,000 reward for tapes of conversations between Trump and Comey. "You have these tremendous - the level of hatred toward him, especially during that period of time with Hillary Clinton where he gave her a free ride", Trump said.
November 13, 2016: In a CBS "60 Minutes" broadcast after the election, Trump says he hasn't decided whether to keep Comey.
