Rocker Gregg Allman dies at age 69; sang and lived the blues


But when Duane Allman left behind a lucrative gig as a session musician in Muscle Shoals, Ala., he called his younger brother to join a band with two lead guitarists and two drummers.

Billboard reports that Allman, who had a history of substance abuse, was previously diagnosed with hepatitis C in 1999 and underwent a liver transplant in 2010.

After unfulfilling experiences with the music industry in Los Angeles, Gregg and Duane ended up in Macon, Georgia - hometown of Little Richard and Otis Redding - in 1969 and brought together the Allman Brothers Band. They hit the bigtime with their 1971 record At Fillmore East, and released perhaps their best-known song "Ramblin" Man' in 1973.

The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 but Allman said in his book that he was too drunk to enjoy it.

Allman was married six times in his life, most memorably to Cher, from 1975 to 1979.

Earlier this year, Allman canceled all of his performances for 2017 ; his last live show was at his Laid Back Festival at Lakewood Amphitheatre in October.

Gregg Allman had one of the most recognizable voices of his generation. The two had a son, musician Elijah Blue Allman, and were frequent celebrity tabloid fodder before divorcing in 1978. Shortly before his death, Allman had been busy touring with his solo backing band, and had recorded a new album that's expected out in early 2017.

Born in Nashville, Tennessee, the rock star known for his long blond hair was raised in Florida by a single mother after his father was shot to death. His seventh solo album, Southern Blood, will be released this year. Later that year, he canceled more dates, citing a throat injury.

Gregg Allman, a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band who overcame family tragedy, drug addiction and health problems to become a grizzled elder statesman for the blues music he loved, has died.

Allman struggled for years with alcohol, heroin and other drugs, and entered treatment for them numerous times, before embarking on a path of recovery in the mid-1990s. As a child, Gregg saved up money from a paper route and bought a guitar that was soon appropriated by his older brother.

After the surgery, he turned music to help him recover and released his first solo album in 14 years "Low Country Blues" in 2011.

The Allman Brothers reunited in 1989 and would tour on and off over the next 25 years. "As much as I hate it, it's time for me to take some real time off to heal".

"[Gregg] was always so careful.to say that the vision for the music for The Allman Brothers came from his brother", Light says. I didn't believe it for a long time until somebody shoved it [Zappa's recording] right in front of my face and said here play it yourself.

"In fact, I appreciate it all more and understand it much better", Allman told the Wall Street Journal in 2015. "If somebody offered me a second round, I think I'd have to pass on it".
