Unfortunately it was only three months after that album's release that Duane died in a motorcycle accident at the age of 24.

More concise originals like "Midnight Rider" and "Melissa", as well as Allman's renditions of blues classics like "Statesboro Blues" and "Done Somebody Wrong", revealed his singular affinity with the black Southern musical vernacular. In those years, he left and rejoined the band several times.

The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.

Their self-titled debut album came out in 1969, but it was their live album "At Fillmore East" in 1971 that catapulted the band to stardom. "RIP Gregg Allman. One of the greats". When he was 2, his father, Willis Allman, was shot and killed by a hitchhiker whom he had offered a ride.

The long-haired musician eventually won the heart of another music star - Cher.

Duane also worked as a session guitarist in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and NY, recording with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, saxophonist King Curtis and other artists before talking Gregg into becoming the lead singer for Trucks' band.

Although Duane dropped out of Seabreeze High School after the 10th grade, Gregg graduated in 1965, with the initial career goal of being a dentist.

Gregg Allman, known for his gentle manner and long blond hair parted in the center, went on to front the band on his own for decades after his brother's death. Traveling- like life- is so much better when you've got friends to share the experience with.

"That was back in the segregated days", Miles told The News-Journal in 2002.

He, however, continued to release solo albums throughout the "70s and "80s, including "Gregg Allman Tour" and 'Playin" Up a Storm". "Gregg was always gracious to me... making sure I was included in everything from photo sessions to various parties and events... and even sometimes asking me to accompany him to events not related to the band's duties".

And many others from the music community chimed in, calling Allman a "legend" and a "titan". I think I speak for all of us when I say that it has been a tremendous honor and privilege to work with Gregg.

Although Allman admitted that he did suffer from severe alcoholism throughout the "80s and '90s, he did experience a mild comeback with his 1986 album I'm No Angel".

"You realized just how good a band could sound as a unit", Jourard said.

He and his brother Duane played in many bands in their youth such as the Untils, the Shufflers and the Escorts.
