British Airways cancels London flights over 'IT crash'

Speaking from the airline's operations centre near to Heathrow in a video posted on Twitter, British Airways CEO Alex Cruz that check-in and operational systems had been affected.

Experts predict the disruption could continue for several days and the airline is facing huge compensation costs after all its flights from the two airports were cancelled on Saturday.

British Airways (BA) canceled all flights from London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports Saturday as a global IT failure caused severe disruption for travelers.

BA said there was no evidence the computer failure had been triggered by a cyber attack.

Delays have also been reported in Rome, Prague, Milan, Stockholm and Malaga due to the system failure.

BA said it is "aiming to operate a near normal schedule of flights from Gatwick and the majority of our Heathrow services" on Sunday.

Initially she had planned to fly from Hungary to London on British Airways, but she found herself stuck in a Budapest airport for more than eight hours before the airline announced it planned to cancel all of its flights. It said it expected that London-bound long-haul flights would land on schedule Sunday.

During that time, police numbers have dropped by roughly 20,000 officers, and the number of armed officers has fallen as well. Saturday's rampage was the latest in a string of attacks to hit Europe, including in Paris, Berlin and Saint Petersburg.

The airline said it was "extremely sorry" for passengers' inconvenience and was working to resolve the problem as soon as possible.

BA has apologised for the disruption and says IT teams are "working tirelessly" to fix the problem.

Passenger Roshni Burt, who was flying from Heathrow Terminal Five to Bahrain with her young son, tweeted there was "chaos" and she was "shocked at the lack of security".

Travellers have been told to check ba.com and its Twitter account for updates about the situation.

Thousands of passengers were left queuing for hours in departure halls at the airports on a particularly busy weekend. Heathrow Airport moved around 75.7 million passengers previous year, its website indicates, and normally handles around 206,000 passengers each day from around 1,200 flights.

Affected customers can claim a full refund or rebook to a future date for travel up until the end of November 2017, it said.

There were more than 30 BA cancellations at Heathrow by 9am on Sunday and delays of around 30 minutes to their flights from Gatwick.
