Chechnya came back into the global media spotlight in April, when Russia's Novaya Gazeta newspaper published a report alleging that Chechen authorities had launched a crackdown on the local gay community, arresting over a hundred suspected homosexuals.
"I told President Putin what France is expecting regarding this issue, and we agreed to regularly check on this subject", Macron Macron noted Putin told him he started initiatives in regard to the situation in Chechnya.
"Our absolute priority is the fight against terrorism and the eradication of terrorist groups and Daesh in particular", he said, using an alternate name for IS, which has claimed several deadly attacks in France.
Putin did more than any other foreign leader to undermine Macron's legitimacy in France's recent presidential election, meeting with his far-right opponent during the campaign.
Macron further said that France and Russian Federation could work together towards a settlement in Syria noting that "it is necessary to seek an inclusive political solution".
But Macron did comment on the topic when asked by a Russian journalist why it had been so hard for certain reporters to get access to his campaign headquarters during the election.
Mr Macron said he expected some tough words.

Then during the French election campaign the Macron camp alleged Russian hacking and disinformation efforts, at one point refusing accreditation to the Russian state-funded Sputnik and RT news outlets which it said were spreading Russian propaganda and fake news.
During the campaign, Macron backed expanded sanctions if there were no progress with Moscow implementing a peace accord for eastern Ukraine, where Kiev's forces have been battling pro-Russian separatists.
As part of his trip Monday, Putin is scheduled to visit the center near the Seine River that includes the Holy Trinity Cathedral along with a school and a book shop.
The Kremlin and RT itself have rejected allegations of meddling in the election.
The exhibition celebrates the ties between Russian Federation and France forged 300 years ago by Peter the Great when he visited France after encouraging diplomatic ties between the two countries.
