Rep. Steve Scalise, who was shot Wednesday during an early morning Republican practice for a charity baseball game, is out of his first surgery, according to a Scalise aide.
The gunman, 66-year-old James T Hodgkinson, from IL, was shot by police after a gun battle and later died.
Lawmakers who were there described a chaotic scene, with many members of the congressional GOP baseball team huddled in a dugout while Capitol police who were part of Scalise's security detail and local Alexandria police engaged in a shootout with Hodgkinson.
Mr Scalise, a representative from Louisiana, is the House of Representatives Majority Whip, making him the third-highest ranked member of the Republican leadership in the House. Hodgkinson, who had been living in his van in Alexandria for the past few months, had posted anti-Trump rhetoric on his Facebook page and had written letters to his hometown newspaper blaming Republicans for what he considered an agenda favoring the wealthy. Let me be as clear as I can be.

"I was so thankful just to hear his voice and just to hear that he was okay", Fleischmann said.
A charity baseball game will take place as scheduled Thursday night at Nationals Park.
