Republican Majority Whip Steve Scalise, the party's number three in the House of Representatives, suffered a hip injury in the early morning ambush.

The moment suspected gunman James T. Hodgkinson opened fire at a group of Republican lawmakers practicing for a charity baseball game on Wednesday morning was captured on video by a man walking his dog.

Scalise underwent surgery and is in critical condition. Two members of Congress said Hodgkins asked them whether the players on the field were Democrats or Republicans. "He is grateful for the fearless actions of U.S. Capitol Police, first responders, and colleagues".

Members of Congress were practicing for a charity baseball game that was scheduled for Thursday night at Nationals Park. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which started its Spring general meeting on Wednesday, began with a prayer for the victims of the baseball shooting, as well as the recent violence in London.
