Grammys switching to online voting, changes top album rule

Last year, they loosened the rules around what constitutes an album to keep up with the new amorphous realities of music and now they've changed their voting system to encourage younger members of The Recording Academy to vote. There are over 13,000 voting members of the committee, so this change will make the voting process much easier for the busy artists and musicians who otherwise would have to be at home to cast their votes.

The 2018 Grammy Awards will be broadcast Sunday, January 28 from New York's Madison Square Garden.

Elsewhere, music creatives (songwriters, producers, engineers, mixers, mastering engineers, featured artists) credited with at least one-third of playing time on a project that wins Album of the Year will also receive a golden gramophone trophy as well.

Under previous rules, the academy considered for Album of the Year any work released in the qualifying year that ran at least 15 minutes with five or more distinct tracks.

Be Civil - It's OK to have a difference in opinion but there's no need to be a jerk. "There may be certain genres within our awards categories where the demographic that tends to participate in making that particular music might be more tech savvy in general, or might have more of a mobile lifestyle than certain other genres, and we think this might appeal to those folks..."

Such criticism only intensified after Beyoncé's "Lemonade" lost the top album prize to Adele's "25" at this year's ceremony. The fifth nominee was country singer Sturgill Simpson, who produced his album by himself. "When it was put that way most people were saying, 'No, not really, '" Freimuth said. Prior to this amended album definition, the only delineation was 15 minutes and five tracks. Freimuth added that songwriters and producers who work on a big hit on an album could earn a nomination for record or song of the year for their song.

"We form these committees only when we hear from ... those genre communities (when) they feel like something's wrong, or that our nominations could be better", Senior Vice President of Awards Bill Freimuth told the Associated Press.

The show also sets up special committees for "nomination review" for more genres outside of just the largest awards.

Earlier this year, they announced that they would be bringing the awards show back to New York City, the first time since 2003.
