United paid Benfica 35million euros (£30.75million) for Lindelof, although the Portuguese club announced that the fee could increase by a further 10million euros due to add-ons.

The Red Devils confirmed the news in a recent post on their official twitter account.

Lindelof has been a long-time target for United as they look to bolster their defensive options ahead of next season's return to the Champions League.

"We're Manchester United, we're going to attract the best players and the biggest players", Jones told Sky Sports.

"I have enjoyed my time at Benfica enormously and I have learned a lot there". It was announced on Wednesday that United had signed Victor Lindelof in four-year contract from Benfica, shortly after which it was reported that Smalling had been "hawked around" in a bid to find him a new home.

Lindelof has always been linked with a move to United but he remained tight-lipped about a possible shift ahead of Friday's magnificent 2-1 win for Sweden over France in Stockholm, saying that he had a contract at Benfica he meant to honour.

Mourinho also has England pair Chris Smalling and Phil Jones at his disposal, along with Argentina worldwide Marcos Rojo, while Dutch utility man Daley Blind has slotted into central defence on occasion. When you have that, you get better as well.
