Russian Federation looking to polish image as Confederations Cup set to start

The Confederations Cup will be held from June 17th to July 2nd in the Russian cities of Kazan, Sochi, St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Along with Team Russia, they will welcome teams from seven countries: New Zealand, Portugal, Mexico (Group A); and Germany, Chile, Cameroon and Australia (Group B).

Russian Federation won the opening match of the 2017 Confederations Cup after picking up a 2-0 victory over New Zealand.

Vitaly Mutko, deputy prime minister and organizing committee chief, told Germany's Spiegel Online: "The attempt to portray Russian Federation as a risky country is something we know about, we also saw that before the Olympic Games in Sochi".

FIFA President Gianni Infantino says it's time to focus on soccer and not worry about the future of the Confederations Cup.

Russian Federation made a rapid start, with Aleksandr Golovin having a drive unconvincingly dealt with by New Zealand goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic, before the hosts were twice denied by goal-line clearances.

And maybe, at the World Cup.

Asked about his team's chances in the tournament, he said: "We're confident we can do well". In the United Kingdom, meanwhile, longstanding World Cup broadcaster ITV will take over broadcast duties from the BBC, with which it has shared coverage of the main event for decades.

Though the system ultimately proved accurate, the time taken and manner of explaining decisions in the stadium and to TV viewers appeared chaotic.

Russia's victory showed it can win a big game at home, even if Putin is in the arena.

But this ID also serves as an additional security measure as fans can not enter the stadium without it even if they have a ticket for the match.

New Zealand is now without a win in four trips to the Confederations Cup, and next plays Mexico on Wednesday in Sochi. Referees will be allowed to stop play if they hear or see racist or discriminatory chanting or evidence of abuse during a match, and a public announcement will be made inside the ground.
