Iran fired missiles on Sunday into eastern Syria, aiming at the bases of militant groups it holds responsible for attacks in Tehran which left 18 dead last week, Iran's Tasnim news agency reported.

The downing of the warplane - the first time in the six-year conflict that the USA has shot down a Syrian jet - came amid another first: Iran fired several ballistic missiles Sunday night at IS positions in eastern Syria in what it said was a message to archrival Saudi Arabia and the United States.

Iran's missile attack on the Islamic State (IS, ISIS, ISIL, Daesh) was a "must" and a demand of the Iranian public, former MP Abolfazl Shakuri says.

Russia's defense ministry says it will treat USA -led coalition planes in Syria, west of the Euphrates River, as targets after the US military shot down a Syrian Air Force jet on Sunday.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard has said that all six ballistic missiles it launched at Islamic State militants in Syria this week hit their targets.

The US has taken a series of actions over the past three months demonstrating its willingness to carry out strikes, mostly in self-defence, against Syrian government forces and their backers, including Iran.

It adds new tensions in a region already unsettled by a long-running feud between Shiite power Iran and the Sunni kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as well as a campaign by Arab nations against Qatar.

"We have never had a coherent Syrian strategy", said one USA official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is standing on the front line, with powerful countries, in terms of missile power", Boroujerdi said following the attack.

But these incidents are tactical; not part of any United States strategy in Syria, analysts said.

UEFA clears Leipzig to enter Champions League
Very few players got the best of him, as his athleticism, positioning, and nose for a goal made him a nightmare to deal with. Salzburg's presence in the draw threatens the place of Leipzig because both have ownership links with energy drink Red Bull.

"Firing these missiles from 600 or 700 kilometres away onto a small building. demonstrates Iran's capacity and intelligence capabilities" against jihadist groups, he said.

The missiles were launched from Kermanshah in western Iran near the border with Iraq.

The IRGC said the attack, the first of its kind in Iran, was in response to an IS-claimed terrorist operation which claimed the lives of 18 Iranians in Tehran earlier this month.

Iran's attack on Syria failed, as the majority of the Zulqifar missiles missed their target.

"The Saudis and Americans are especially receivers of this message", Gen. Ramazan Sharif of the Revolutionary Guard told Iranian state TV in an interview.

Both the Iranian strikes and the US's downing of the Syrian plane, followed by its tensions with Russian Federation, come as various players in the region jostle and scramble for position to take over territory in the post-ISIS era.

It sends "a message to the Saudi-led alliance that "our missiles have the range and the accuracy to strike anywhere in the region", Handjani said.

Izadi said Sunday s strike on Deir Ezzor, halfway between Iranian and Israeli territory, was also meant as a message to Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu, "who regularly threatens Iran".

IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot also downplayed the significance of the Iranian strike.
