An Army email sent to facility personnel and relatives was more explicit than the tweet, saying an active shooter was on the building's second floor. He said there was no evidence that any shots were fired. It was later confirmed by Holliday the 911 calls came from the Sparkman complex.

But Huntsville hospital officials said they had not heard of any incoming patients, local TV stations reported.

A full base lockdown lasted for about two-and-a-half hours, and some buildings were shut for four-and-a-half hours, Holliday said. "Honestly, if we have to overreact, I would rather overreact than underreact".

That includes Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, who said she would continue to monitor the situation and pray for a peaceful, and quick, resolution.
