Trump pushes 'energy week' and goal of exporting resources

Donald Trump is set to take credit for increasing US exports of gas and oil during his White House's'Energy Week

WASHINGTON (AP) — With U.S. exports of oil and natural gas surging, President Donald Trump says the U.S.is on the brink of becoming a net exporter of oil, gas and other resources.

"President Trump affirmed that the United States continues to remove barriers to energy development and investment in the United States and to U.S. energy exports so that more natural gas, clean coal, and renewable resources and technologies are available to fuel India's economic growth and inclusive development", President Donald Trump said in after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"One of the things we want to do at (Energy) is to make nuclear energy cool again", Perry said.

Perry's comments come as the administration is promoting American "energy dominance" and opportunities for exporting fossil fuels. Yesterday, at a press briefing at the White House - it's apparently supposed to be "Energy Week" - Perry used similar phrasing, calling for "an intellectual conversation" on global warming.

Perry said he discussed the potential for usa coal exports to Ukraine with President Petro Poroshenko during his visit to Washington last week. "It's not feasible to rely exclusively on renewables", Perry said.

"That's his vision for America-an all of the above energy policy", Perry said.

"How many coal plants?"

"First we'll attack the conventional wisdom that says you can't drive the economy without harming the environment", Perry said. "If we do not, then China and Russian Federation will fill that void", he said. "How much effect is what is at debate here", he said.

Many current and future energy projects to be focused on replacing aging coal-powered plants and adding more alternative energies to the grid mix.

Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., who wrote in a Monday press release that it "makes it clear that President Trump and Secretary Perry have it wrong: Baseload energy technologies, such as coal, do not make our electric grid more reliable and efficient".

In other words, you've got a direct conflict between Trump's push for gas exports and his purported goal of bringing factory jobs back to the US. And they're not the only energy experts saying so. It also cites the growing roster of opponents of the study's perceived bias, including U.S. Sen.

It's been more than two months since Energy Secretary Rick Perry ordered the DOE to conduct a 60-day study on whether wind and solar are undercutting "baseload" coal and nuclear power - a request that many renewable energy and environmental groups fear will lead to a foregone conclusion against renewable-friendly state subsidies and policies.

Our friends over at the Houston Chronicle report that API chief economist Erica Bowman questioned the emphasis on baseload that underpins the Energy Department's grid study. "Absolutely not", she said. Jerry Brown, who he'd seen at a ministerial meeting in Beijing, was going to have his state be part of the Paris Climate Accord.

However, the president said, there remained a good deal of energy reserves that were yet untapped.

While observers do not expect Republicans to embark on an effort to rescind tax breaks for renewable power, like the production tax credit for wind, Perry said earlier this week that everything should be on the table when discussing tax reform.
