Sturgeon meeting EU chief Brexit negotiator Barnier

In an open letter to Europe's Chief Negotiator for Brexit, Michel Barnier, Children's Commissioner for England Anne Longfield argued that the EU must take "a more constructive approach" to the residency status of children born to European citizens residing in the United Kingdom and British-born youngsters living in Europe.
Speaking in Brussels this morning, Mr Corbyn said: "We're representing 13million people who voted Labour in the General Election".
"In contrast to the Conservatives' megaphone diplomacy, we will conduct relations with our European neighbours respectfully and in the spirit of friendship".
She added that despite this headline Brussels had done nothing to detail how this would happen in practice - leaving Brexit negotiators with a flimsy, ill-thought out and legally flawed proposal it would be impossible to work with.
Mr Corbyn presented Mr Barnier an Arsenal football shirt as a gift, with "Barnier" printed on the back - the club is based in his Islington North constituency, and the Labour leader is a lifelong fan.
In return, Mr Barnier gave Mr Corbyn a vintage poster showing a snowy mountain scene in the Savoie region of the French Alps.
"We want to unilaterally legislate to ensure that EU nationals can remain living in Britain, with rights of family reunification", he said following a meeting with Michel Barnier in the European Commission's Berlaymont headquarters.

The meetings in Brussels come as the Conservative government publish the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill, which will convert the EU's laws into United Kingdom laws mean that the same laws will be in place after Brexit goes through.
It's the first in a series of private meetings Barnier will hold ahead of the second formal round of negotiations, followed by Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones.

The Frenchman said the meetings were requested by the British politicians, insisting: "Of course, I will only negotiate with the United Kingdom government".
Barnier also said he wanted progress on all three priority Brexit issues before talks could move on to future ties including a trade deal.
According to the ONS, there are 588,000 children in England who are European Union nationals - 260,000 of whom were born in Britain - who do not now know what rights they will have to remain in the United Kingdom after Britain leaves the European Union and whether they will have to leave behind their home, school and friends.
