South Africa's Zuma faces vote of no confidence for umpteenth time

SA President Zuma faces no confidence secret ballot

"The motion of no-confidence is. negative", Baleka Mbete, speaker of the 400-member parliament, said.

Zuma has easily survived several previous parliamentary votes held without secret balloting.

Opposition parties had hoped the secret ballot would mean some MPs from the governing ANC party might side with them against the president.

"The ANC welcomes the opportunity to once again use the occasion of the debate on the motion of no confidence to speak to these successes which are daily lived reality for many of our people", he added.

The scandal-hit 75-year-old thanked a crowd of supporters in Cape Town and dismissed attacks against his African National Congress party, which has been plagued by in-fighting.

If the vote had gone against him, he would have had to relinquish office.

He is also fighting a court order that could reinstate nearly 800 corruption charges against him over a multi-billion dollar arms deal in the 1990s.

South African opposition has repeatedly accused the president of corruption and fraud.

Zuma's political controversies have drawn attention away from South Africa's pressing long-term economic challenges.

Mr Zuma easily survived an impeachment vote in 2016 after South Africa's highest court ruled he had breached the constitution over government funds spent renovating his private home. Both Zuma and the Guptas have dismissed the accusations.

As head of the party that led South Africa out of apartheid, Zuma won the presidential election in 2009 and 2014, but has been dogged by criminal investigations and corruption allegations. This time, at least 26 ANC MPs voted for his departure.

"We will never endorse or vote in favour of any motion that seeks to cripple our country", the ANC said, calling the vote an attempt to remove the party from power. So a minimum of 55 members of the ruling party would need to defect to pass a motion of no confidence in the president.
