The bomb was a crowd pleaser, sure, but his best play came in the third quarter, when, with the Chiefs facing a second-and-1 at the 49ers' 1-yard line, Mahomes received the snap from under center, executed a play-action fake and started drifting to his right.
But while it may be a while before we see Mahomes on the field in a game that matters, he's turning heads on the practice field and will be perhaps the most important player to watch when the Chiefs open the preseason on Friday night against the 49ers. He completed a 32-yard deep pass to his No. 1 target, Tyreek Hill, on the first play of the game.
The 49ers also have a coach with a Kansas connection.

The 49ers offense responded to the Chiefs' touchdown by going backward - minus-seven yards - on their first offensive drive and gaining five yards on their second. They finished with 17 penalties for 131 yards.
Mahomes is the first quarterback the Chiefs have selected in the first round since Todd Blackledge in 1983.

Lining up at left defensive end, Thomas had another pressure later in the quarter while defensive end Aaron Lynch, a former starter playing against the Chiefs' second-string defense, had three pressures and batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage. That was evident again Friday as Robinson had a 63-yard catch-and-run and had a touchdown wiped out by a penalty. Beathard. Fourth quarterback Nick Mullens did not get in the game.
