Vanderhall was charged with three counts of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder, and he's being held in Mineola, New York, as he awaits his arraignment on Sunday.
The fourth woman who escaped is reported to be in stable condition at Nassau County Medical Center. It was at that moment that a friend ran from the house to get help, making a critical choice that likely saved her life.
He is accused of using the hammer to beat to death his mother, Lynn Vanderhall, 58, his sister, Melissa Vanderhall, 29, and her friend Janel Simpson, also 29. "His mother had enough", said Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick of the Nassau County Homicide bureau.
The suspect allegedly broke into the house with a hammer he obtained from the family garage, the Daily News reported.
All of them were here in Venderhall's home in Hempstead when it happened.

Cops found him sleeping in a parked vehicle about 2 miles from the murder scene. He obtained a large hammer.
He became unhinged after his mother Lynn Vanderhall, 59, kicked him out of their Hempstead home for violent behavior, prosecutors allege. "With this framing hammer he broke through the basement door into the residence".
"She was covered in blood", said Sykes, who called 911. "He's trying to kill us!", according to officials. "The most lovely memory of my daughter was her smile, her love, she was so protective of me", said Wendy Simpson, the mother of one of the victims.
Denis Simpson said his daughter, Janel (pictured, March 2016), had worked late as a secretary at Northwell Health and then went to her friend's house to hang out. "They had fun. That's consolation that they lived", the father told NBC.
He described his daughter and her friends as fun-loving women who had gone to to Carnival in Trinidad and were planning a trip to Cuba in the fall.
