US President Donald Trump says devastation left by Hurricane Irma was far greater than anyone expected

Of those killed were eight patients at a Hollywood nursing home who spent days in sweltering heat after Irma knocked out their air conditioning. He also said investigators will look into how many windows were open.

On Thursday, detectives were at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills after receiving a search warrant to investigate the eight patients' deaths, which police believed were heat-related.

Gov. Rick Scott said officials were in contact with the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills over the past three days. It may have had air conditioning problems, they added.

One Miami-area apartment building was evacuated Tuesday after authorities determined a lack of power made it unsafe for elderly tenants, while officers arrived at another retirement community to help people stranded on upper floors who didn't have access to working elevators.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said officials were providing ice to 27 senior residence facilities still without power, local media reported. All were admitted to the hospital or transferred to another nursing home. Several other residents are reported to be in critical condition.

"There were a number of very sick people". The workers get them from a nearby hospital.
