Umang Bedi, who served as managing director for India and South Asia regions for Facebook, has made a decision to leave the company, the social juggernaut said on Tuesday. "He has built a really strong team and business during his time with us, and we wish him all the best", Facebook said in a statement today. Facebook's head of consumer and media in South Asia, Sandeep Bhushan will take over as interim MD, sources in the company said.
Umang Bedi took over as head at Facebook India in July 2016 after former MD Kirthanga Reddy returned to the U.S. to head the Global Accounts team at the company's headquarters in Menlo Park. Bedi was appointed in 2016 after serving as Managing Director of the South Asia region at Adobe. Bhushan is a former Samsung IT and mobile business director.
According to PTI, Bedi is looking forward to start an entrepreneurial venture of his own. At the time of appointment Bedi had termed the new role as a promising opportunity, "I am thrilled to join Facebook and am looking forward to working with the talented teams in India, to help brands and agencies grow their business on our platform". Facebook was forced to drop the initiative after howls of protest. While Facebook promoted Free Basics as a programme aimed at providing basic Internet access to people across the country, critics slammed the service saying it violated the basic principle of net neutrality.
