Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia have signed an agreement on the purchase of Russia's S-400 missile system, a defense cooperation official said Monday. US Congress has 30 days to object.
The S-400 is a very capable missile-defense system, somewhat comparable to the US's MIM-104 Patriot, according to CSIS.
"This sale furthers U.S. national security and foreign policy interests, and supports the long-term security of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region in the face of Iranian and other regional threats", the State Department said in a statement.
"The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region", it said.
Saudi Arabia is a long-standing USA ally in the Middle East and its arms deals with Moscow have caused concern in Washington. "This visit is the beginning of strategic cooperation", al Harithi said.
The Kremlin says an agreement to sell Russian missiles to Saudi Arabia does not pose a threat to any other country.
The Saudis in addition have also agreed to buy the US Thaad missile Defence systems at a cost of $15 billion. Saudi Arabia's neighbours, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, have also been supplied THAAD systems.
