Arsene Wenger: 'Jack Wilshere showing best form for a long time'

When Wilshere sought a loan spell to prove his fitness last season, Sampdoria were the only Serie A side to show a genuine interest in Eddie Howe's watchful eye at Bournemouth.

Defending In Numbers is a new Deezer Originals football podcast, created by Squawka.

But Wenger doesn't believe that is the case and he is certain that if Wilshere continues on his current path at Arsenal, he will be part of the England squad next summer.

He has not played for England since Euro 2016 and is understood to be desperate for more game time as he looks to win a place in the Three Lions squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

I believe Jack is in the best form I've seen for a long time.

"He is very close now to being considered like anybody else".

Speaking ahead of Saturday's game with Watford, Wenger said: "He [Wilshere] doesn't necessarily have to leave Arsenal to go to the World Cup".

"If he keeps going like he is at the moment he will go to the World Cup".

Wenger added: 'We have plenty of good players but he is maybe more of a No 10 than any other player.

"He is more a No.10 than anyone [in the current England squad]. He can play in tight areas".

Wilshere has only appeared in the EFL Cup and Europa League this season.

However, Arsenal oversaw his recovery and two starts in recent cup matches offered the prospect of a permanent return to the starting line-up.

Averaging 1.59 key passes per 90 minutes, Wilshere has been more creative than his Arsenal team-mates, from fewer successful passes.

Wilshere has also done well winning 53.85% on his duels so far, beaten only by Aaron Ramsey with 59.02%.
