New Orleans police officer was shot and killed early Friday morning.

It happened shortly after midnight, police say.

Harrison also said one or two of the officers returned fire, possibly hitting the suspect. No other officers were wounded. Michael Harrison said the officer was shot multiple times.

He is waiting for all family members to be notified of the Officers death.

Police were evacuating residents from apartments near the scene as the situation developed.

The officer who was killed was assigned to NOPD's 7th District, which polices New Orleans East, Harrison said.

State Police and ATF were also on the scene early Friday morning.

The New Orleans Force Investigation Team will investigate the officer-involved shooting, according to department protocol, Harrison said. New Orleans SWAT surrounded the building and were able to get the suspect to peacefully surrender, Harrison said. He is in a local hospital, and will be charged once he is released.

"Unfortunately, our worst nightmares have come to be", Landrieu said.
