US House approves Puerto Rico relief fund

Springfield residents came together for a charity baseball game Thursday night to raise money to support hurricane relief in Puerto Rico. A total lack of.accountability say the Governor.

"In a trio of tweets, Trump wrote" "We can not keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been unbelievable (under the most hard circumstances) in P.R. forever!" Puerto Rico's Treasury Secretary Raul Maldonado said last week that the government was poised to run out of money at the end of October, and may have to furlough government employees, a move that would hinder recovery efforts.

Puerto Rico is still largely without electricity and clean water following widespread devastation from Hurricane Maria, almost a month after it made landfall.

When NPR's Tom Gjelten asked about Trump's latest tweets, a spokesman said the governor has spoken with the White House asking for "clarification".

The House is on track to back Trump's request for billions more in disaster aid, $16 billion to pay flood insurance claims and emergency funding to help the cash-strapped government of Puerto Rico stay afloat.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz accused President Donald Trump Thursday of condemning the Puerto Rican people to "a slow death" for what she characterizes as an act of "genocide".

In response, Cruz wrote, "The goal is one: saving lives".

"I'm not sure the timing is ideal given the fact that they're in the midst of this challenge that continues to evolve", he said.

"Mr. President, fulfill your moral imperative towards the people of Puerto Rico". Authorities told CNN on Wednesday that the death toll had gone up to 45, but at least some 113 people were still unaccounted for.

Among those with 67s who are tied for eight are Brendan Steele, last week's victor at the Safeway Open, and Davis Love III. Australian Cameron Smith, ranked number 151 in the world, took the lead with a sparkling eight-under-par 64.

Attempted escape reported at NC prison; several employees injured
A spokesperson for Sentara Albemarle Medical Center told ABC News that the hospital has received six patients to date. Calls to Correction Enterprises and the Department of Public Safety Thursday weren't promptly returned.

The debate played out as the House passed, on a sweeping 353-69 vote, a $36.5 billion disaster aid package that includes assistance for Puerto Rico's financially-strapped government.

The island was in financial peril before the storms Maria and Irma hit.

60 percent of wastewater treatment plants are working on generator power.

Lawmakers are expected to approve the bipartisan measure that will also provide relief to the storm-struck areas of Florida, Texas, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and leaders of both major parties have lauded the bill. The recovery effort comes after the government-owned electricity utility PREPA filed for bankruptcy in July - and after Puerto Rico itself filed for bankruptcy, facing more than $120 billion in debt, as NPR's Samantha Raphelson has reported.

Trump's comments had prompted swift condemnation from some Democratic lawmakers, who said threatening to withdraw help from Puerto Rico would amount to abandoning United States citizens as the island struggles with the storm's aftermath. He added, "We've saved a lot of lives". But the source conceded the optics of the president's handling of the crisis in Puerto Rico have been "terrible".

"It's puzzling, given everything the administration is doing to reconstruct the island".

Some of those mayors have called for all supplies to go through them, so they can distribute the aid.

Cole said the price tag could rise as relief efforts transition from emergency response to rebuilding.

It was not immediately clear which Superfund sites the EPA was referring to.
