Russia's defence ministry on Tuesday posted images it said proved the U.S. was aiding the Islamic State jihadist group in the Middle East, but social media users pointed out they included a still from a videogame.
In a Facebook post, the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation explained that during a Russian mission to liberate the Syrian region of Abu Kamal, they uncovered "facts of direct cooperation and support provided by the US-led coalition to the ISIS terrorists".
The US refused to conduct airstrikes over the leaving IS convoy.
The ministry also said that the USA coalition categorically refused to strike the retreating terrorists in spite of repeated proposals by the Russian military to conduct joint actions.
The posts included several aerial images supposedly backing Russia's claim, including one labeled: "ISIS automobile convoy leaves Abu Kamal for Syrian-Iraqi border (November 9th, 2017)".
The ministry also said that the coalition's aviation tried to disturb Russia's Aerospace Forces near Abu Kamal to ensure safe exit of terrorists.
"These facts are conclusive evidence that the United States, while imitating an uncompromising fight against worldwide terrorism for the global community, in fact provides cover for Islamic State units", the defense ministry said.
"There is indisputable evidence that the United States pretends it is waging irreconcilable struggle against worldwide terrorism in front of the global community, while in reality it provides cover for the combat-ready Islamic State groups to let them regain strength, regroup themselves and advance U.S. interests in the Middle East", the ministry said.
He added that Russian forces suffered another blow when the Syrian regime claimed that its forces had liberated Al Bukamal when in reality government troops have not yet regained control of the city.
"I would say the Russian Ministry of Defense statements are about as accurate as their air campaign".
