As can be seen in the video below, Ammar can reliably unlock his mother's iPhone X, so it wasn't just a one-off fluke.
Face ID uses a neural engine to map the contours and shape of your face in real time.
At the time of unveiling the iPhone X with the absence of Touch ID back in September, Apple claimed that the probability of unlocking the phone using Face ID is one in 1,000,000 as opposed to fingerprint detecting Touch ID at one in 50,000. In the end, iPhone X recognized this face the owner of the mobile device. They then demonstrate both the mother unlocking her phone by looking at the screen, followed by her son doing the exact same thing. Doing this involves rotating your head in a circular motion - twice - to capture all the different angles of your face. Apple has said in the past that there is only a one-in-a-million chance someone can get around the system, and it can't be confused by hairstyles, beards, or hats. Ammar could once again unlock her iPhone X, but only on the third and sixth attempt.
More importantly, imagine the privacy implications if Ammar was the one with the phone, and he was six or seven years older than he is now; no teenager wants their parent (s) to be able to access their smartphone at will.
