Undercover cops fight each other in drug bust

Officers from the city's 11th Precinct ordered their colleagues from the 12th Precinct on to the ground without realizing who they were it is reported

Two officers from the 12th Precinct were posing as drug dealers Thursday when they attempted to arrest two undercover officers from the 11th Precinct after mistaking them for buyers, reported WJBK-TV.

The chief said the incident stemmed from the execution of a search warrant on a suspect drug house in the 19000 block of Andover Street near Seven Mile, which is on the border of the department's 11th and 12th Precincts.

"Embarrassing" is how Detroit Police Chief James Craig described the situation, briefing WWJ's Jon Hewett and other reporters at a news conference Monday. The 11th Precinct team continued to execute the search warrant. Instead, fellow undercover cops from the 11th Precinct showed up, ordering the 12th Precinct officer to the ground.

The plain-clothes officers were directed to the ground and at some point, an officer from the 11th Precinct pointed a shotgun at the officers, Craig said.

The officers and their command staff are part of an investigation by the department's Internal Affairs unit, a police spokeswoman confirmed to The Post.

According to unnamed sources, the incident occurred when two special ops officers from the 12th Precinct were running an operation in Andover.

"This is when it started to go terribly wrong", Craig said.

DPD says they do plan on submitting the case to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for review and evaluation of the conduct, and that possible charges could be assault and battery.

There was also confusion inside the home, as arguments turned into a physical fight.

Moreno declined further comment on the "altercation" and said she could not confirm that punches were drawn or that undercover officers drew their service weapons during the incident. Then an officer punched back.

Craig said those two officers have been placed on restricted duty. Both were released after being treated, he said. In the video, the officer's body camera gets knocked to the floor. A third person, a supervisor from the 12th Precinct, has been reassigned as the investigation continues. "It didn't, and for that we're very thankful".

A neighbor who also resides in Andover blamed the department's mishandling of the operation on a lack of communication.

No one was seriously injured.
