House passes bill allowing concealed carry across state lines

'Concealed carry' gun bill undermines NY law, makes us less safe (Editorial)

Today, the House of Representatives acted to pass what may very well become the most important right to bear arms bill in history.

"This radical Republican bill is a direct threat to public safety", Pelosi said in a statement.

"The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act is the culmination of a 30-year movement recognizing the right of all law-abiding Americans to defend themselves, and their loved ones, including when they cross state lines", Cox said.

Additionally, the bill specifies that a qualified individual who lawfully carries or possesses a concealed handgun in another state: (1) is not subject to the federal prohibition on possessing a firearm in a school zone, and (2) may carry or possess the concealed handgun in federally owned lands that are open to the public.

The passage of the bill is a startling development after recent mass shootings that have rocked the nation and sparked calls for tightening, rather than loosening, gun regulations. In Massachusetts, the decision to issue gun licenses is made by local police departments.

"The truth is that concealed carry laws save lives", Ryan said in a statement. The bill is a top priority of the National Rifle Association.

The House approved the bill, 231-198, largely along party lines. He also urged New Yorkers to Tweet their displeasure toward GOP lawmakers, although the list included Long Island's Pete King and Staten Island's Dan Donovan, two Republicans who voted against the measure.

If it ultimately passes, the bill is expected to be challenged on the idea that it is an illegal intrusion into state's rights.

"This fundamental right does not stop at a state's borders and law-abiding citizens should be able to exercise this right when crossing state lines", Hudson argued.

"Even the most careful and knowledgeable concealed carry permit holders find it hard to navigate the current maze of state and local concealed carry laws", Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC), author of the bill, said. "But today, I'm furious".

"The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act both threatens the safety of the men and women in law enforcement who proudly protect our communities everyday and directly undermines our efforts to combat gun violence", McMahon said.
